Information Specification Modification Image Review Price 2013 bmw x1
The BMW X1 is a compact luxury crossover that seeks to blend diminutive dimensions with the luxury and performance associated with the blue roundel automaker. The X1 actually launched in other global markets in 2010, but strong sales meant BMW simply didn’t have the production capacity to make examples for the U.S. until now.
The X1 that hits the market this fall is actually a mildly facelifted, mid-cycle update of the X1. Outside, its design has been lightly reworked from the debut model to be a bit more aggressive, although it is still clearly a BMW crossover that looks like a 7/8ths-scale X3 from most angles. More body-color painted accents make the refreshed model stand out a bit more, while new headlamps and available LED accent lighting (included with the Xenon light package) bring the X1’s look in line with the rest of BMW’s lineup.
The BMW is the only vehicle in this group that is based on a rear-wheel-drive platform, which it loosely shares with the 1- and the 3-series. In fact, the entry-level model will be the rear-wheel-drive X1 sDrive28i, powered by a 240-hp, 2.0-liter four and priced at $31,545. For another $1700, BMW will also offer an all-wheel-drive version with this engine, dubbed the X1 xDrive28i. The top-of-the-line X1 will be the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i, powered by BMW’s 300-hp, 3.0-liter inline-six and offered at $39,345. Both engines are force-fed by a single turbo, while BMW insists on its misleading "TwinPower" terminology. Likewise, the "28" and "35" monikers bear no relation to the actual engine displacement. The 2.0-liter four is equipped with a gas-saving stop-start system. Neither performance nor fuel-economy figures have been given at this point. Unfortunately, none of the X1 models are available with BMW's excellent six-speed manual; a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic is standard on all versions.
Premium character thanks to comprehensive standard equipment and high-grade options.
The further augmented range of standard equipment on the new BMW X1 guarantees driving enjoyment and comfort at premium car level. The scope includes climate control, electrically adjustable heated exterior mirrors, foglamps, LED tail lights, chrome tailpipe finishers, elasticated straps for the front door pockets, a leather-lined steering wheel, an onboard computer, and a sound system with CD player, AUX-IN connection, five loudspeakers and two-line display showing computer data, telephone numbers and music track titles. The range of optional extras includes, among other features, the navigation system Professional with hard disk and a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System, as well as the options of Comfort Access, Automatic Climate Control, panorama glass roof, automatically dimming exterior and rear-view mirrors, electrically operated seat adjustment, a rain sensor and steering wheel heating.
BMW ConnectedDrive, meanwhile, offers a wide choice of options for optimising the convenience, safety and infotainment functions of the car. Adaptive Headlights with cornering function, available in conjunction with the xenon headlight option, illuminate the road based on the steering angle, speed and yaw rate. The new BMW X1 also offers a rain sensor including automatic driving lights control and High-Beam Assistant. Accurate and safe manoeuvring is facilitated by Park Distance Control and the rear-view camera, which relays its images live to the Control Display of the iDrive operating system. The Cruise Control system with braking function, meanwhile, adjusts not only the engine management and braking but also the gear selection of the optional automatic transmission in order to maintain the driver's pre-selected speed.
BMW Assist, a globally unique mobility service, comprises among other features a telephone information service and the Automatic/Advanced Emergency Call function with automatic detection of the vehicle location. Other innovative technologies allow unlimited Internet use and the integration of the Apple iPhone and other smartphones as well as music players, including the use of Internet-based services. The Apps option enables iPhone users, among other things, to receive Internet radio stations and to display Facebook and Twitter posts on the onboard monitor. Another new function - Real-Time Traffic Information - provides the driver with exceptionally accurate traffic alerts and recommended diversions.
